The Bike Rodeo is the first outdoor event of the spring and one of the most useful things we do all year.
We start with a safety check on every bike — brakes, tires, chain, seat height — and a proper helmet fitting, because a startling number of kids arrive with a helmet three sizes off and the straps hanging loose. Then Scouts run a course of cones set up in the lot: slow riding, controlled stopping, weaving, looking over your shoulder without steering into a cone, and signaling a turn while actually turning.
Why we bother
Holliston is a town kids ride around in. The skills on this course are the ones that matter on Washington Street and on the rail trail: stopping short, holding a line, and being predictable to a driver. Scouts finish the morning noticeably steadier than they started, and the older dens help coach the younger ones through the course.
Bring
- A bike that mostly works. We will help with the rest.
- A helmet, even a badly fitting one. We will fix the fit.
- A water bottle.
If your Scout does not have a bike, tell us ahead of time and we will sort something out. Nobody sits this one out.
